You&#8217;re much more generous with the audience than i&#8217;m prepared to be.  I think you&#8217;re analysis of the text and the dramaturgy of it is spot on.  I can&#8217;t say i&#8217;m swayed to think any better of the audience&#8217;s laughter though.
