Our June Live Night is from our Stage Partner Red Stitch Actors Theatre – the Melbourne premiere of Joanna Murray-Smith’s Fury, directed by Brett Cousins and Ella Caldwell.
Well, it’s actually more of a Live Afternoon, as this time it’s a Sunday matinee – but we all love matinees, right? The Live Night is at 2pm on June 30 at Red Stitch, Rear 2 Chapel Street in St Kilda East. It’s a small theatre, so book early for this one: again, it’s bound to be a popular show.
Live Nights are Book Club for theatre: an informal chat after a show, facilitated by Witness with the help of our Stage Partners, who provide discount tickets. The idea is to meet people, have some interesting conversations and, most of all, to have a fun time. It’s perfect if you’re sick of going to the theatre by yourself, but you’re welcome to bring a friend.
Fury, which originally premiered at the Sydney Theatre Company in 2013, pushes into controversial territory: where personal sacrifice and responsibility are pitted against political correctness, and “good” people must confront the limitations of their empathy in the face of terror.
Alice and Patrick are conscientious and thoughtful, educated and open-minded, and that’s how they’ve raised their son, Joe. One evening, Joe’s teacher arrives to tell them that Joe is in trouble. Detained by police, he has committed an act of vandalism against the local mosque.
Are the children who are inheriting the world forced to place pragmatism ahead of conscience, or are idealism and hope the only way forward?
Fury is a scintillating, often hilarious and profoundly provocative work from one of Australia’s most acclaimed playwrights that follows the critical success of Red Stitch’s production of American Song in 2017.
