Bookings are now open for the August Live Night, Samara Hersch’s Dybbuks. This Chamber Made production looks fascinating: here Hersch and her collaborators explore the many ways that the dead inhabit female bodies through language, voice, memory and desire.
The idea of Live Nights is to see a show together, and then to chat afterwards over a drink in a informal but facilitated conversation. These nights are all about what you think: it gives you permission to buttonhole strangers in the foyer and ask them what they thought. And they’re great fun. Our partners provide discount tickets that are available exclusively to Individual and Patron supporters of Witness. The August Live Night is the 5pm performance on Sunday, August 19.
Dybbuks is a bilingual (Yiddish & English) contemporary theatre and music work created by lead artist Samara Hersch and collaborators together with three performers, a local Yiddish choir of inter-generational women and four female musicians. Part performance, part concert, part exorcism, Dybbuks combines mythic stories, traditional Yiddish songs with contemporary composition to present a feminist reimagining of S.Ansky’s iconic Dybbuk story. Through original and traditional text, music, song and image, the work deconstructs ideas of the possessed female body, exploring the way in which women across generations continue to embody, preserve and revive the dead.
Samara Hersch is an Australian artist working across theatre, film and contemporary performance whose practice is concerned with subverting representations of the ‘other’ through politically and socially engaged work. Chamber Made makes original works located at the nexus of music, sound and performance. The company is renowned for redefining artform boundaries and producing works that emerge from a deep collaborative dialogue across artform disciplines.
